Sample Letter

Dear Board of Supervisors,

I am writing as a concerned Santa Cruz community member to voice my opposition to the proposed installation of an 18-foot bronze female surfer statue at the Dirt Farm on East Cliff Drive in Pleasure Point.

While I fully support honoring women's contributions to surf culture, I believe the Dirt Farm is the wrong location for this installation. My concerns are as follows:

The Dirt Farm is a beloved natural coastal bluff that serves as an irreplaceable community gathering space. A monument of this scale would dramatically increase foot traffic and loitering, accelerating erosion of this fragile bluff edge and degrading the coastal landscape for future generations.

The scale of an 18-foot statue is simply not appropriate for this intimate space. The proposed site sits among a distinctive trio of palms whose natural character would be visually overwhelmed and diminished by a structure of this size.

This installation would be deeply inconsiderate to the residents who live directly adjacent to the proposed site. An 18-foot monument would obstruct neighborhood views, draw ongoing loitering into a quiet residential area, and introduce persistent noise that conflicts with the character of the surrounding community.

I urge the Board to vote against this installation at the Dirt Farm and to work with the broader community to identify a more appropriate location — one that honors the spirit of this proposal without compromising an irreplaceable natural space.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
